Interestingly, the custom of rings for marriage predates the concept of diamond engagement rings by several centuries.


Diamonds Haven't Been Forever

Diamonds have been worn as adornment as far back as the days of the Roman Empire, but weren't used in diamond wedding rings until Archduke Maximilian I of Hapsburg presented one to Marie of Burgundy on the occasion of their wedding in 1477. The concept of engagement rings had started about 250 years earlier as a result of a papal decree; Pope Innocent III decided that couples should go through a longer betrothal period prior to taking vows. Upon announcing their wedding plans, it was customary for the man and woman to exchange plain metal bands - gold for royalty, silver for nobility, bronze for the upper and middle (merchant) class, and iron for peasants.


The Market for Diamond Engagment Rings is Created

The practice of presenting diamond engagement rings is shockingly recent - and in fact, goes back less than sixty years. In fact, it was the result of a corporate marketing strategy designed to convince people of the existence of a "historical tradition" that in fact had never existed!

It was the DeBeers company - a corporate entity based in South Africa that today controls over half the world's diamond supply - that came up with the most successful "catch phrase" of all time - "A diamond is forever." This campaign, which began around 1950, resulted in the creation of the new "tradition" of diamond engagement rings.

A similar attempt was made in U.S., again in an attempt to convince the public that it had long been "traditional" for men to receive engagement rings. American men didn't fall for it, but eventually, a similar marketing campaign resulted in today's extensive market for "his and hers" diamond wedding ring set.

Regardless of what advertising executives say, it is important that those who have a wedding in their future do what is economically comfortable and meaningful for them. After all, millions of dollars have been spent for diamond wedding ring set to celebrate weddings that lasted only a few years or months. 4. Humans make them too

In recent decades, man has discovered how to make emeralds in laboratories. These emeralds are "real" in the sense that they have all the mineralogical qualities of earth-made emerald, but they are much less valuable. How to tell the difference:

A. Most branded shops you go to will label these emeralds honestly (using names like "created", "synthetic", "lab", or "Chatham").

B. Too clear to be true. Created emeralds are usually much clearer and more sparkly than natural ones. If you see a very clear sparkly deep green emerald for 69.99, you can bet it's synthetic.

C. A nice large emerald set in silver or 10 kt gold. Jewelers will usually not match a very precious stone with not so precious metal. So, you can check the stamp on the metal to make sure it's at least 14 kt gold (or platinum).

5. Manage the Mark-up

Emeralds, like many precious stones, hold their value through the centuries. But if you want to buy an emerald as an "investment", you need to be conscious of where you buy it. From the cutter to your hand, the emerald can be marked up as much as 300%. Mainstream jewelry chains that offer free lifetime service and a well-known brand are the places where your emerald will be the most "marked-up". These stores usually carry average quality emeralds. Some of the best deals are on Ebay, garage sales and in pawn shops where there is almost no mark-up. Over a dozen parties have been scheduled to take place every day of Fashion Week both before and after the shows at local hotspots, as well as exclusive VIP pre-parties for celebrities, designers and their guests. In addition, the Fashion Week team has arranged for the return of the city-wide St. Louis Shopping Event on March 29, where shoppers will get special Fashion Week discounts on the items and trends that they have seen on the runway. Fashion enthusiasts, local boutiques and downtown businesses are already gearing up for the influx of out-of-towners and the full week of glamour, fashion shows and star-studded after-parties.

August of 2007 marked a ground-breaking first season for Saint Louis Fashion Week. For five nights, the city welcomed hundreds of out-of-towners and St. Louis residents, as fashion enthusiasts flocked to runway shows and after-parties to get a glimpse of the hot new trends, top designers, models and entertainers.

Budweiser Select and BORBA Skin Balance Water, a premium, enhanced water with botanicals, antioxidants and vitamins designed to provide distinct skin-care benefits, are the presenting sponsors of Spring 2008 Saint Louis Fashion Week.

Nest, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the lives of women artists and artisans in developing countries by helping them create sustainable entrepreneurial businesses through micro-credit loans, is this year’s charity partner. Throughout the weeks leading up to Fashion Week, partners and sponsors of Fashion Week will be participating in fundraising efforts for which proceeds will benefit the charity.
